Three people were arrested last week on drug charges in Liberty County, and a narcotics detective narrowly escaped injuries when a suspect he was trying to apprehend drove straight toward him.
Narcotics detectives, working on an anonymous tip, had the suspects under surveillance and followed the trio to the LaQuinta in Flemington. Authorities saw a passenger get out of a burgundy Toyota pickup in the parking lot and make contact with a man who exited a nearby Dodge Stratus. The two men reportedly made an exchange.
The driver of the Toyota left the area, and the narcotics detectives followed. The Stratus passenger returned to his car, as did a woman who had been in the hotel. Detectives drove into the parking lot and approached the suspects. When one detective identified himself to the driver as a police officer, the driver accelerated and veered the vehicle in the detective’s direction. The detective moved out of the way, and only his leg was brushed. The Stratus driver pulled out onto Highway 84 and took off with authorities in pursuit. The chase ended  when the Stratus crashed into another vehicle on the Highway 84 overpass near the intersection of Highway 196 East in the McIntosh community. The driver, later identified as Keri Thompson, was arrested. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The occupants in the Toyota pickup also later were arrested.
Thompson has been charged with aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, felony fleeing and eluding and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Rachel Councel was arrested and charged with possessing heroin, cocaine, marijuana and a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Orlando Abney of Hinesville was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and Schedule 2 narcotics with the intent to distribute.
