A former city of Walthourville firefighter pleaded guilty to third-degree arson to land Monday in Liberty County Superior Court. According to public records, Julian Adkins waived a formal indictment by the grand jury and entered his guilty plea in front of Liberty County Superior Court Judge Charles Rose.

Adkins was arrested in May and charged with arson for allegedly starting a small fire in a wooded area near Carter and Griffin roads in Walthourville, according to public records. Bond was set at $100,000, according to court documents, and Adkins posted bond under the conditions that he be confined to his home and wear an ankle monitor.

A subsequent arson charge was added, according to court records, and Adkins was re-arrested in connection with another small fire near Wilder Road that occurred in April. Adkins was allowed out of jail on his own recognizance with prior bond penalties and conditions in place.

On June 10, his bond was modified to allow him to attend medical and psychological appointments, church services and work. He also had to continue wearing the ankle monitor.

Atlantic Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Melissa Poole confirmed that Adkins pleaded guilty to third-degree arson to land, which is a felony, according to court documents, for his involvement in both fires.

 On Monday, Rose sentenced Adkins to five years of intensive probation to start in January and 96 hours of community service to be done before January.

It is unclear whether Adkins was a firefighter at the time he was arrested. Calls to the Walthourville Fire Department were not returned by press time.
