Jan. 27: Entering auto — A man reported that someone stole several items from his car in the 600 block of Caines Road. Missing were a pistol and full magazine valued at $600, a $50 holster, a $50 watch and $2 in loose change. The weapon is owned by the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department and was work-issued to the man. There was no sign of damage, and the responding officer said heavy dust and pollen would have hindered fingerprinting.  

Theft by taking — A man who lives on the 500 block of Bradwell Street said a gold necklace, platinum wedding ring, an Army vest and helmet and about $65 in cash were missing from his home. He did not have any ideas about who could have taken the items.

Jan. 28
Doing business without a license — Two complainants came to the police department to report they took their vehicles for painting to a Gen. Screven Way shop and were not satisfied with the work that was done. They also said the business did not have a valid license to operate within city limits. The officer advised that the work quality was a civil issue, but that he would investigate the business, status. The business owner admitted to not having a license and agreed to get one. He was told not to conduct business in city limits until a license is obtained.

Counterfeit bill — A customer at the Liberty Regional Medical Center gift shop reportedly tried to purchase items with a $50 bill, but the bill did not pass a counterfeit-ink test. The customer said she received the bill from a gas station in Brunswick. The gift-shop clerk said she did not complete the transaction, so the hospital did not incur a loss. Officers advised the customer on procedures for reimbursement.

Burglary — Colonial Floral and Gift Gallery on South Main Street reported that someone took $150 from the drawer kept in the cash register overnight. The complainant said the drawer is kept locked. Nothing else from the shop was reported missing. The store did have an employee who had just quit without indication, but the employee had not worked in the past week, the complainant said.  

Jan. 29
Robbery, strong-arm — A woman said she was robbed at a gas station on East Oglethorpe Highway while on her way into the store with a $10 bill. A man approached her and snatched the bill from her hand, she said, and she caught up to him and told him to give it back. He reportedly swore at her, grabbed her and punched her several times. The complainant’s friends drove her to the emergency room, where police made contact.

Theft by taking — A resident in the 900 block of Highland Drive reported that someone took boxes of Avon products off of her porch. The complainant said her husband received the delivery and left some items outside for another saleswoman, whose products are delivered to the same address.
The husband said he saw a vehicle pull into his driveway while the boxes were outside, but he assumed it was someone picking the items up for the other saleswoman, so he did not go outside.
The items were discovered missing when the saleswoman came to pick them up, but they were already gone. An inventory of the items was not immediately available.

Theft by taking — A resident in the 200 block of Sequoia Circle reported that someone stole an automatic transmission that had been sitting in his yard for about two months. The item was valued at about $450.

DUI, fleeing or attempting to elude, speeding — A man was arrested after trying to elude an officer during a traffic stop at West Oglethorpe Highway and Forest Street. The arresting officer previously had initiated a traffic stop for the vehicle speeding but was unsuccessful, and central dispatch later sent a “be on the lookout” order for the vehicle. The officer saw the truck again and initiated a stop. He followed the truck to Comfort Inn & Suites, where the driver got out of the truck and appeared intoxicated.  He also was cited for speeding, DUI refusal and fleeing. The man was arrested for DUI and was transported to the Liberty County Jail, where he was offered a $3,491 bond.

Jan. 30
Burglary — A real-estate agent reported that $1,500 in appliances was stolen from a foreclosure home in the 200 block of Wentworth Way. There was no sign of forced entry, but a cleaning subcontractor, whose name the agent did not know, reportedly also had access to the home.  

Burglary — A resident in the 100 block of Monroe Avenue reported that her daughter’s $100 bicycle was stolen from inside the open garage.  

Drug paraphernalia, arrest for other agency — A man wanted on Long County burglary warrants was arrested at 701 W. Oglethorpe Highway and faced additional charges after a canine officer found narcotics inside the suspect’s vehicle. The man also was cited for driving on a suspended license. He was transported to Liberty County Jail and placed on hold for Long County.

Found property — An employee from an organization that helps the homeless reported an unauthorized Glock magazine was found within one of the organization’s homes. She asked that it be confiscated, as it is against the nonprofit’s rules.

Suspicious acts — A resident in the 600 block of Saunders Avenue reported that someone used a credit card to open her dead-bolted door and stole a number of her daughter’s hair ribbons. The woman said someone has been messing with her and previously had broken in and ripped a hole in her mattress. The complainant pointed to marks on the door as evidence, but the officer said the marks appeared to be paint marks made when the door was painted. The officer advised the woman, who contacted maintenance about her door issues.

Feb. 2
Illegal transfer of license plate — An ice-cream truck was placed out of commission after police discovered the owner of the truck had placed the tag of another vehicle on the truck to replace an expired tag. Police made arrangements to have the truck towed but said they’d keep it plugged in to prevent the man’s ice-cream inventory from melting while he worked to fix the tag issue. Police learned the man did not have a business license and advised him to get one before he conducted business within city limits.

Feb. 3
Disorderly conduct/Harassing communications/stalking — A small altercation ensued outside a gas station on Oglethorpe Highway. A man and his new girlfriend were at the gas station when the man’s former girlfriend pulled up, entered the store and allegedly starting hitting her ex-boyfriend with her hands and fists. The woman also allegedly damaged the new girlfriend’s car door. The ex-girlfriend claimed the woman had been stalking her around town, but the woman denied it.

Burglary first degree – shed — A man reported that some of his tools had been taken from his shed. The man’s wife said she saw two teenagers “eyeing” the tools that were in the driveway, so she moved the tools into the shed. The couple said they went out to run errands and returned to discover someone had forced their way into the shed. The couple said several tools were missing. They were valued between $3,000-$4,000 total.

Feb. 4
Theft by taking — A woman reported someone stole $1,000 from her bedroom. The woman said she kept the money in a bag and noticed it was missing from her Krebs Lane residence after she returned home from a dental appointment. She told police that the only other people in her house were her mother and her boyfriend. The woman admitted her boyfriend had taken money from her in the past but not in such a large sum. There was nothing else missing in the house and no signs of forced entry.
