Shortly after midnight Sept. 21, a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped black Ford F-150 driven by a man the deputy suspected was intoxicated. Before back up could arrive, the driver of the truck fled, driving east-bound on Highway 84 at speeds of over 100 mph.

More authorities joined in the pursuit and chased the truck onto Highway 144, headed toward Richmond Hill. The driver reversed directions and headed back toward Fort Stewart, again reaching speeds of over 100 mph as other motorists pulled over.

While heading around a curve, the driver lost control and careened into the woods, striking several trees. The driver was airlifted to a Savannah hospital and a passenger was treated at Liberty Regional Medical Center. The Georgia State Patrol responded and is investigating the crash.

“My deputies conducted themselves in a professional manner while pursuing this truck. Thank God no one was badly hurt,” Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes said.
