A Liberty County fire captain died Wednesday afternoon while driving, police said.

Jeffery Driggers, 49, a captain with the Lake George Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, was driving a Chevrolet C1500 pickup truck when he went into cardiac arrest, Georgia State Patrol Trooper Lyle Thurmond said.

Thurmond said the truck then struck a tree at the intersection of Limerick Road and Fourth Street in the Lake George community, which is off Highway 17 near Midway, shortly after 5 p.m.

Driggers died en route to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, Thurmond said.

Former Lake George Fire Chief Samantha Ashdown said Driggers had served on the department for the past five years.
