Logs and diesel fuel closed a main road following a single-vehicle wreck Thursday afternoon.
A tractor-trailer carrying a load of logs tilted on its side, dumping the load into the ditch and spilling diesel fuel on Talmadge Road. The road was closed in both directions for about 40 minutes while Liberty EMS tended to the male driver. The Walthourville Volunteer Fire Department along with units from the Hinesville Fire Department cleaned up fuel.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Quincy Melvin, the driver did not appear to be seriously injured but was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center for treatment. The man was not identified, as authorities had not notified family members yet.
The initial report from Melvin is that the driver crossed into oncoming traffic and then overcompensated trying to get back in his lane. Melvin said the quick side-to-side motion might have caused the trailer to tilt and drag along the road before the truck hit soft dirt in the shoulder and tipped. What caused the driver to swerve initially is still under investigation.
The Liberty County Sheriff's Department opened up one lane of traffic, but Melvin said the removal of all the debris could take several hours. Liberty Hinesville Emergency Management Director Tom Burriss showed up and immediately requested assistance from the Georgia Division of Motor Carrier Compliance to get the necessary equipment to get the tractor-trailer and logs out of the ditch.
