Long County woman killed in ATV wreck

Tragedy struck Long County over the weekend as a 36-year-old woman was killed after she lost control of the all-terrain vehicle she was driving.  

According to a crash report written by Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Glen Walters, Melissa Smith-McCullough died from injuries sustained when she wrecked a 2014 Polaris 500 at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.  

The report stated that McCullough was driving west on Demery Howard Road when she lost control of the ATV and ended up in a ditch.  McCullough was thrown 42 feet, striking a tree, and suffered severe head trauma.  

According to the report, a passenger was riding with McCullough on the ATV and was injured.  

Fellow Long County resident, April Harker, 34, suffered injuries to her chest. She was thrown 32 feet. 

Harker was taken by ambulance to Liberty Regional Medical Center, but later was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. As of Monday, she was in stable condition.
