Ludowici man charged with vehicular homicide

A Ludowici man was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol after after he was involved in a  wreck that killed a Glenville man.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class William Bowman, at 12:30 a.m. May 23, he was dispatched to a single-vehicle wreck on Old Barrington Road in Long County.  When he arrived, he found a 2004 Chevrolet 1500 truck overturned on the road. Long County EMS and the Ludowici/Long County Volunteer Fire Department were treating and loading Susan Kathleen Weaver, 39, into an ambulance. A unit from the Long County Sheriff’s Department also was at the scene.
Bowman said he found 34-year-old Glennville resident Jason Clifford Cox at the scene with serious injuries to his head and face.  According to the trooper, Cox was pronounced dead at the scene by the Long County Coroner.
A third person, Maynard Levi Yoder, 35, was also injured in the wreck with cuts and bruises. He was also transported to the hospital.
The driver of the truck was Matthew Jeremiah Sharp, 30, of Ludowici.  Bowman said Sharp was given a field sobriety test and was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
According to the trooper, Sharp was driving north and, as he approached a curve, ran off the right side of the road, struck a tree and hit a culvert.  The truck flipped and landed upside down in the road.
Bowman said Cox was a passenger in the backseat and was ejected. His head struck a tree. Weaver also was a passenger in the back seat, and Yoder was a passenger in the front of the truck.
According to the trooper, Yoder has been released from the hospital.
Bowman said Weaver was initially taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup and after she was able stable, she was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Bowman said she was initially listed in critical condition but as of Tuesday, she had improved and was conscious.
Bowman said that in addition to being charged with the DUI and vehicular homicide, Sharp also was charged with failure to maintain a lane, driving with a suspended license and driving without any insurance.
The trooper said Sharp went before Long County Magistrate Judge Brenda Wingate for a bond hearing but was denied bond and is in the Ludowici/Long County Jail.
