The Ludowici Police Department hosted the Coastal Area Traffic Enforcement Network’s monthly meeting on Aug. 25 at the Ludowici Church of God. The Heritage Bank sponsored the event.
About 50 law enforcement officers from around the region attended the training session and enjoyed a meal.
Cpt. Luther Hines, who heads up the network, welcomed everyone and introduced the guest speaker, Master Trooper Ray Jackson.
Jackson, who is with
the Georgia State Patrol, is the area supervisor for the Implied Consent Unit, which is based in Hinesville.
Hines gave the group a refresher class on the Intoxilyzer 500, a piece of equipment used to test drivers and determine if they have been drinking.
“We are losing DUI cases because operators are making small mistakes,” Hines said. “Attorneys are now attacking the operators instead of the equipment when they are making their cases.”
He stressed to the officers the importance of being consistent when testing a suspect and staying up to date on training.
Hines also said officers need to make sure the equipment is in proper working order. If any problems arise, officers should contact Hines so devices can be inspected, repaired and put back into service.

“The training was pretty good. It covered some stuff that you don’t normally come across,” he said. “I love coming to these things. You get to make contacts with other officers and then if you need them, they are there to help you, and vice-versa. You’re there to help them.”
LPD Chief Richard Robertson said, “I’m glad that we were able to host this. The turnout was good and I appreciate all of the people who attended.”
