A former Long County resident recently was charged with murder in connection with the death of his son in 2008.

According to Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles, Jamell Charles Johnson of Butts County was arrested last week in the death of his 4-month old son. Johnson was charged with malice murder, felony murder and two counts of felony cruelty to children.

Nobles said that on Aug. 4, 2008, he and a Long County EMS unit responded to a report of an unconscious child at Johnson’s residence in Land of Lakes Mobile Home Park. Nobles said EMS personnel discovered that the child wasn’t breathing and administered CPR. The child was transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, where he later was pronounced dead.

After a long investigation by the LCSO and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a Long County grand jury indicted Johnson, and bench warrants were issued for him. On Thursday, Johnson was arrested. He was transported to Long County on Friday. Nobles said Johnson currently is incarcerated in the Tattnall County Jail.

The child’s name was not released at the request of the LCSO.
