No decision has yet been made to seek the death penalty in the case of Edison A. Ortiz, who was charged last month in the shooting deaths of his in-laws.
Ortiz, 24, a private with 1-64 Armor Battalion, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, was charged with two counts of malice murder.
Ortiz is the sole suspect in the shooting of Deryl Bruce, 41, and Linda Bruce, 44, both of Swainsboro. Ortiz allegedly shot his in-laws outside his Swainsboro home shortly before 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29.
“No decision has been made to seek the death penalty at this point,” said Emanuel County District Attorney Hayward Altman on Wednesday. “A decision will be made only after consultation with law enforcement and the victims’ family and a thorough review of the case file.”
Ortiz, who is currently being held at the Emanuel County Jail, was denied bond last week, according to jail officials.
