A competency hearing for a man charged with four counts of murder, five counts of aggravated assault and one count of cruelty to children was continued.

The case against Wallace LeCounte James, who allegedly killed his mother and cousin on Aug. 28, 2008, in Riceboro was continued indefinitely.

According to James’ attorney John Ely, it is due to his client’s continued declining health.

James earned the nickname The Hatchetman of Riceboro, after allegedly bludgeoning his mom, Francenia James, inside her Barrington Ferry home. Afterward, James’ reportedly walked to his cousin’s house and killed Abraham Moody.

Moody died at a hospital.

The two were killed with what initial police reports described as an axe or hatchet.

James has no prior criminal records but does have an extensive history of mental illness, according to public records.

James was found to be incompetent to stand trial and was committed James to Georgia Regional Hospital of Savannah.

In addition to severe mental illness James was diagnosed with dementia in November 2009.
