NASSAU, Bahamas — Police in the Bahamas are requesting the public's help in locating a 45-year-old Georgia man who was swept into the Atlantic Ocean a week ago.

Police spokeswoman Chrislyn Skippings said Monday that island authorities have been searching for Mark E. Mercer of Savannah.

Witnesses told police that Mercer disappeared while taking photographs in a restricted coastal area in Winding Bay when the high surf washed him into the water.

Two local men attempted to rescue him but were unable to fight the waves.

The U.S. Coast Guard had helped Bahamian police search for Mercer for days, but no sign of him has turned up.

Police on Monday issued a missing person poster with Mercer's photograph and are asking the public for help.
