Sheriffs are the chief law enforcement officers of each Georgia county and have many mandated responsibilities by state law. They provide courthouse security, operate jails, transport inmates and mental patients, perform traffic and law enforcement functions and register sex offenders.
Given the diversity of their responsibilities, sheriffs must be knowledgeable of practices and procedures in many areas.
Liberty County Sheriff Don Martin attended the Georgia Sheriffs Association’s annual summer training conference from July 21-23 in Greene County.
More than 100 officers from around the state participated. The conference’s training sessions provided information about public safety and other sheriff’s department duties.
During the event, the 2009-10 association officers, including the president, McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall, were installed.
In addition, new officers were installed for the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes, including the president, Murray County Sheriff Howard Ensley.
The association is comprised of 159 elected sheriffs and has the support of more than 70,000 honorary members throughout the state.
