ST. SIMONS ISLAND - Authorities say an inmate who walked away from a work crew has been recaptured on St. Simons Island.
Glynn County Emergency Management Director Jay Wiggins tells the Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/GG0Iqq) that the inmate was apprehended around 8:30 a.m. Thursday on one of the island's main roads.
Wiggins said a resident spotted the inmate and kept him in sight until officers arrived.
The normally tranquil island off the Georgia coast has been abuzz with police activity as dozens of officers and some tracking dogs hunted the inmate.
Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said the inmate was clearing debris from drainage ditches on Florida Street when he left shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
