A passerby’s report of a suspicious odor near the Liberty County Courthouse at about 10 a.m. Wednesday shut down Main Street between M.L. King Jr. Drive and Pine Street; however, nothing turned up during a search of the area.

The Hinesville Fire Department, Hinesville Police Department, Liberty County EMS and Liberty County EMA responded to the call, which fire department Capt. Kris Johanson said is the normal procedure when unidentified odors are reported.

Johanson, who didn’t know whether the passerby who called 911 was a pedestrian or a motorist, said teams searched the courthouse for the source of the reported odor, which the passerby described as gas-like.

“We have guys in there looking with detectors, but we’re not sure yet,” the captain said at the scene. “We’re just looking for whatever we can find.”

After nothing turned up in the search, Main Street reopened to traffic at about 11 a.m.
