The Heritage Bank in Midway was robbed during the lunch hour Friday. Midway Police Chief Kelli Morningstar only could confirm the bank was robbed at 12:39 p.m. before deferring all questions to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

"We’ve notifed the (Federal Bureau of Investigation)," said LCSO Chief Deputy Jon Long. "Any statements will have to come from them at that point. I can confirm we’ve had a robbery at the Heritage Bank. The sheriff’s office responded on behalf of the Midway Police Department."

Long said he could give no description of the robber or robbers because the two descriptions they had thus far were completely different. He said a LCSO team was gathering that information. He also noted there was no description of a getaway vehicle.

The bank and its parking lot were cordoned off with yellow emergency tape. Both Butler and Martin Streets were blocked off near the bank, which is located about five minutes from I-95. Long said as more information comes in, his office will make it available to the Courier.

The bank branch, which is less than two miles from Interstate 95, has been robbed before.

In October 2010, a man walked into the bank about 9:30 a.m., brandished a shotgun and demanded money. His escape was not detailed in a Courier story.

On July 7, 2010, a woman was robbed at gunpoint as she was making a withdrawal from an ATM behind the bank.

In December 2005, a man walked into the bank near closing time and demanded money. He ran from the bank and was believed to have gotten into a vehicle near the corner of Martin and Ferguson roads. He reportedly fired a small handgun outside the bank, possibly at a customer at the bank’s ATM who had started following the suspect.

The bank was also robbed in February 2002. That time a man had broken a window to get inside the building overnight and surprised employees as they were opening for the day.

No arrests have been linked directly to any of the robberies.
