A truck hauling bales of cardboard caught fire and closed a highway in Liberty County Tuesday night.
EB Cooper Highway was closed for several hours, according to Riceboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Fire Chief Dennis Fitzgerald.
The driver of a Toyota Tacoma was hauling bails of cardboard on a flatbed trailer. According to Liberty County EMA Director Mike Hodges a wheel on the trailer overheated and caught the tire on fire, igniting the cardboard.
The driver was able to separate the pickup from the trailer before the trailer was engulfed in flames. The driver was not hurt.
Traffic was rerouted from Highway 119 to other roads. Deputies were stationed as far out as Higway 84 in Riceboro and Dunlevie/Talmadge road in Walthourville to re-route traffic.
The highway was reopened early Wednesday morning.
The fire is currently under investigation.
