RICEBORO — It was a relaxing day at home on March 17 for Amar Lambert and Tommy Anderson Jr. It didn’t end that way. Their house caught fire, and Anderson and Lambert had to get out of it. Not before, though, they carried their grandfather out of the house to safety.
For their deeds, the Riceboro City Council recognized the two young men at Tuesday’s meeting.
“These two young men took it upon themselves and helped move an elderly man,” said Mayor Chris Stacy. “We think that they are worthy of being rewarded for doing a heroic thing for our city and community.”
Williams, 19, had just gotten home from work, he said, and he heard his mother yelling that the house was on fire.
Lambert, 15, said he was just relaxing at home, talking with friends at their residence.
“We had to get the kids out of the house and try to get everybody out of the house,” Williams said.
Lambert said when he first heard the house was on fire, “I thought, my stuff is all going to go up,’” before springing into action.
Their grandfather was reluctant to leave the house, before the two stepped in to pick him up and carry him out.
“We had to pick him up and take him across the street,” Williams said.
