Senators to discuss brigade decision today

Georgia's U.S. senators are visiting Fort Stewart to see how neighboring communities have been hurt by the Defense Department's decision to scrap plans to station an extra brigade of 4,000 troops at the Army post.

Republicans Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss scheduled a news conference after their visit Monday. The senators have pledged to help the southeast Georgia military community find new investments to offset the loss of a new brigade.

Leaders in neighboring Hinesville were furious when the Defense Department said in June it was backing off plans announced in 2007 to bring a new infantry brigade to Fort Stewart.

Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas said more than $450 million had already been invested to build schools, homes and infrastructure for the influx of troops.
