Long County Sheriff Craig W. Nobles applied for the Walmart Community Block Grant in July which was recently approved according to the Long County Sheriff’s Office.

Nobles said upon receiving the approved funds the department purchased new equipment and safety related products for the Long County Crossing Guards.

Nobles said they purchased highly visible LED safety vests and gloves which will be helpful during the traffic congestion coinciding with the morning and afternoon school periods. "Foggy days and low light conditions can make the roads hazardous; I want all my Crossing Guards to be safe, and go home to their families at the end of their shifts," Nobles said.

The WCBG funds were also utilized to purchase a SEGWAY Nine-Bot for Long County School Resource Officer Diane Duncan. "McClelland Elementary and Middle Combined Schools have a lot of area to cover, and with the SEGWAY, Deputy Duncan has greater mobility to ensure the safety of our children and staff at the school," Nobles said.

Nobles added that the grant covered the entire amount of the purchases with no costs incurred for the local taxpayers.

The Community Grant Program awards grants ranging from $250 to $5,000 through each of their facilities (Walmart Stores, Sam's Clubs, and Logistics Facilities). Sheriff Nobles thanked Walmart for their support of Long County Sheriff's Office and the community.
