A minor fire at the Chemtall-SNF plant in Riceboro was quickly extinguished by employees Monday morning. The were no injuries in the 10-minute fire and the plant is back in operation after a precautionary evacuation.
David Kaye, plant manager, said a scrubber caught fire about 3 a.m. The scrubber handles gases from an incinerator which had been shut down for about an hour when the fire started.
Kaye said the cause of the fire is not known but is being investigated; "We will have to check this out very carefully." Several area fire departments responded to the emergency; Kaye said, "We certainly appreciate this."
Liberty County Fire Coordinator James Ashdown said Chemtall's employees did a good job handling the fire, adding, "We just did some mopping up."
