Soldier dies from injuries sustained in wreck

A Fort Stewart soldier who was involved in an automobile accident June 27 died from injuries sustained in that wreck.
According to Fort Stewart Public Communications Chief Kevin Larson, Robert Patrick Jones died at Memorial Health University Medical Center on July 8 from the injuries stemming from a wreck on Rye Patch Road in Long County.
The accident took place at about 1 a.m. when, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jamie Wilson, Jones lost control of his 2005 Pontiac GTO and the vehicle struck a culvert on the road. The car went airborne for 66 feet and hit a second culvert before landing on a roadway.
According to Ludowici/Long County Fire Chief Darrell Ballance, Jones had to be extracted from the vehicle, and suffered extensive trauma to his head.
The soldier was airlifted from the scene to MHUMC, where he later died.
According to Larson, Jones was a Corporal in the Army, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 1st brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
Jones joined the Army in November 2005, and had enlisted in the Infantry. He was assigned to Fort Stewart in March 2006 and was deployed to Iraq from January 2007-March 2008.
Jones, 22, was from Crestline, Calif.
