A draft of a long awaited Coastal Comprehensive Plan will be presented at a series of meetings next week, including one in Midway.
Georgia Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Mike Beatty announced the final round of public input workshops for Georgia's citizens to provide comments on the plan.
The meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Coastal Electric Cooperatives office on Highway 17 just south of Midway.
A copy of the plan is available on DCA's website, www.dca.state.ga.us/development/PlanningQualityGrowth/programs/coastalplan.asp, and the Georgia Planning Association's website at www.georgiaplanning.com.
In February 2005, Gov. Sonny Perdue directed DCA to complete a Coastal Comprehensive Master Development Plan by last September. As outlined in Perdue's executive order (www.gov.state.ga.us/ExOrders/02_11_05_01.pdf), the plan is to outline a vision for Georgia's coastal area that promotes sustainable development without compromising the region's valuable and vulnerable natural environment.
In July 2005, Beatty appointed of the Coastal Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, made up of 34 31 residents from Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh counties and three members from outside the state's six-county coastal region.
CCPAC members have worked with DCA staff and experts to study tourism, economic development and environmental management, housing and transportation issues affecting Georgia's coastal area as it worked to develop the draft plan.
A third and final round of public meetings has been set for next week to present the draft Plan and a summary of the planning process.
Following presentation of the draft plan, subject matter experts will answer citizen's questions on issues identified as regional priorities; (1) water and sewer, (2) stormwater, (3) transportation, (4) culture and historic resources, (5) natural resources, (6) regional growth management, (7) business and industry, and (8) tourism.
Specific meeting date, location and time information is provided below.
- Monday, Jan. 28 - Brunswick- 6 - 8 p.m. The Stellar Conference Center, 144 Venture Drive, Brunswick. (FYI: The Stellar Center is located at I-95's Exit 38, behind the Quality Inn.)
- Tuesday, Jan. 29 - Savannah- 6 - 8 p.m. The Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm Street, Savannah. (FYI: The Coastal Georgia Center is located behind the Savannah Visitor's Bureau.)
All interested parties are encouraged to participate in the meetings. Citizens that are unable to attend may still participate by providing written comments.
