Teen charged in clerk's slaying

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Savannah-Chatham authorities say a high school dropout is behind bars accused in the weekend slaying of a convenience store clerk.

17-year-old Steven Phillip Smith is accused of killing 42-year-old Jatinkumar "Justin" Patel during a botched robbery at a BP station. Police said a co-worker was wounded in the attack.

The shootings occurred shortly after midnight Saturday.

Smith was arrested Monday and was charged with murder, aggravated assault and armed robbery. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Recorder's Court.

Police said Smith is a suspect in two other armed robberies in the city
