Taylors Creek Elementary School is implementing the Bus of the Month for the 2019-2020 school year in effort to improve student bus behavior, according to an LCSS press release.

Bus expectations have been posted on each bus for Taylors Creek Elementary School. The bus safety program, which includes bus expectations, is taught by Jeffery Polk, the physical education teacher at TCE. In addition, the drivers review bus expectations with students. As students demonstrate good behavior on the bus, they are rewarded with positive office referrals and/or bus tickets.

For positive office referrals, the bus driver submits a form with the student’s name, bus number, and any positive comments to the administrator. The positive bus referrals are announced over the intercom at school during morning announcements.

Bus tickets are given to the students by the drivers to use at the PBIS store in exchange for coupons such as, eat lunch with a friend, 5 minutes of free tech time, and so on.

Consequences are still given to students who do not follow bus expectations. Bus drivers will give parents courtesy notes about their student’s behavior before an office referral is submitted. After several reminders to follow bus expectations, the bus drivers will submit bus referrals to the administrator. The LCSS Code of Conduct specifies bus consequences.

In order to qualify for the bus of the month, the bus has to have minimal bus referrals and the most thumbs up signals.

As the drivers pull into TCE, they give a thumbs up or a thumbs down signal to a designee on the bus ramp. The thumbs up indicates that the behavior was acceptable on the bus. The thumbs down indicates a need for improvement. The designee records the signal each day. At the end of the month, the thumbs up signals are tallied. The bus with the most thumbs up signals and the least referrals is recognized as Bus of the Month.

Taylors Creek implemented this program at the beginning of October.

The BUS OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER IS BUS No. 18, driven by MS. ANGEL. She has been driving for TCE for the last seven years, according to a press release. Ms. Angel has a double route each day. The parents and students adore her as she ensures their child’s safety each and every day. Her students describe her as loving, caring, and nice. Ms. Angel is dedicated to her students and to TCE. Congratulations, Ms. Angel, Bus 18!
