In what is being called the biggest single economic development investment project in Georgia history, Hyundai Motor Group will invest $5.4 billion to build electric vehicles and the batteries that power them at the 2,924-acre site in Black Creek.
Georgia. Gov. Brian Kemp also announced Friday another $1 billion in investment from Hyundai Motor Group suppliers, and the company has promised to provide approximately 8,100 jobs to the region. For context, Bryan County’s 2021 entire tax digest was approximately $1.6 billion.
Work on the Mega-Site will begin in January, officials. say, and the facilities could begin full production in the first half of 2025. Eventually, the Black Creek facility could produce up to 300,000 electric vehicles a year.
The announcement by Kemp on Friday ended weeks of speculation over plans for the 2,923-acre site in Black Creek, which was purchased in 2021 in what was then billed as the largest such land purchase in Georgia history. At one point, Kia, whose parent company is Hyundai, was reported to be building a facility here.
The state paid $61 million for the Mega-Site, which is governed by the Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority, which includes, Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham and Effingham counties. Bryan County, which chipped in $9 million, is the fastest growing county in the state and one of the fastest growing in the U.S.
