Lot of activity in Sept.

We are finally on the downside of summer. Hopefully, there will not be too many more oppressively hot days.
September usually feels much better temperature-wise. I cannot wait. I also cannot wait to share Keep Liberty Beautiful events in

September, because you will want to plan now to be a part of them.

We are kicking off fall with our annual beach sweep on St. Catherines Island beaches on Sept. 9. During a beach sweep we will be “sweeping” any trash and debris from the beach. It amazes me that items tossed on the mainland can end up on the beach. This is out most popular cleanup. I can’t blame volunteers for that. If you are going to pick up litter, why not opt to do it on a sandy white beach? Sounds great.

We are soliciting boaters to provide transportation for our cleanup volunteers. It is an island, so we must get there by boat. So if you have a boat and would like to participate, we would certainly welcome you. We usually need about 10 boats to adequately seat our volunteers.

Since seating is limited, we encourage volunteers to register as soon as possible. Registration fills up quickly. We book volunteers in the order we receive their requests. Contact KLB by phone 880 4888 or email klcb@coastalnow.net to register and to find out more!

Our next quarterly Recycle It! Fairs are also scheduled in September on Saturday, Sept. 16. It’ll help you if you start sorting and packing items now. We provide the fairs to collect numerous household items that cannot be dropped off at local recycling centers. We partner with other groups to make these recycling and collection as convenient as possible throughout the county: Goodwill Industries, Coastal Auto and Recycling, Liberty County Solid Waste, law enforcement, and the cities of Midway and Walthourville. This quarter’s fairs will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at:

Liberty County Health Department
1113 E. Oglethorpe Hwy., Hinesville

Liberty County Community Complex
9397 E. Oglethorpe, Midway

Walthourville City Hall
222 Busbee Dr.

Items we recycle at the fairs:
• Electronics, cellphones and accessories
• Household paint (cans must be sealed, clean and at least half full) The paint is donated for reuse so it must be viable. If you have old paint in inadequate containers, open the cans, add either sand or cat litter and let the paint dry then toss the cans in the regular garbage.
• LED, CFL’s and fluorescent light bulbs
• Used motor oil and antifreeze
• Car batteries.
• Household batteries
• Printer ink and toner cartridges
• Telephone books, catalogs and books
• Household goods and clothes and shoes (gently used)
• Old prescription medications and over the counter medications (no needles or syringes)

We all have plenty of those items in our homes and storage rooms. So, start sorting now to get these things recycled.

We will also host a Shred It! Day at the Health Department that day. You definitely want to start now sorting any legal, medical or financial files that you would like to safely recycle by shredding.

KLB will also sponsor the September Chamber Progress through People Luncheon at noon Sept. 21 at the performing Art Center. We have about 4,000 volunteers each year for community improvement efforts. This is a great opportunity to hear about volunteering and about KLB programs. Register for through the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce by Sept. 18 at operations@libertycounty.org or 368-4445.
