Keep Liberty Beautiful is a county program to improve the area's environment.

Keep Liberty Beautiful would like to thank the many restaurants and bars that are participating in the Cigarette Litter Prevention coaster giveaway campaign “GEROGIA’S COAST IS NOT AN ASHTRAY,” this Friday, Aug. 23.  KLB, will also, give away 20 Campaign T-Shirts. Details on how to receive a T-Shirt will be located on the KLB Facebook page.

Keep Liberty Beautiful is partnering with the Liberty County Extension to participate in the Great Georgia Pollinator Census on Aug. 23 and 24 at the Liberty County Community Complex in Midway.  Please join us from 9-10 a.m., as we count our county’s pollinators. For more information on this event contact Gabi Wall at gabiwall@uga.edu or (912) 876-2133.

September is a busy month for Keep Liberty Beautiful and I cannot wait to share the information on all our upcoming events occurring in September! First, we have the Native Plants Awareness events.  Most of the information we share on native plants will be on Facebook and Instagram, but we will share some garden tips on Sept. 7, in the Reading Garden in Midway, from 10 a.m.-noon.

KLB will also sponsor the September Chamber Progress through People Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 12 at noon at the Performing Arts Center on East Oglethorpe Highway.  Registration for this luncheon is arranged through the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce at operations@libertycounty.org or (912) 368-4445.

Our next quarterly Recycle It! Fairs are also scheduled in September on Saturday, Sept. 14.  This is another event that really helps you if you start sorting and packing items now that you would like to recycle.  We provide quarterly Recycle It! Fairs for collection of numerous household items that cannot be dropped off at local recycling drop off centers.  We partner will several community partners to make these recycling and collection opportunities possible and as convenient as possible throughout the county: Goodwill Industries, Coastal auto and Recycling, Liberty County Solid Waste, local law enforcement, Shred-it, and the cities of Midway, Hinesville and Walthourville. These quarter’s fairs will be open on Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at three convenient locations:

Liberty County Health Department (Shred-it truck)

1113 East Oglethorpe Hwy in Hinesville

Liberty County Community Complex

9397 East Oglethorpe in Midway

Walthourville City Hall

222 Busbee Drive in Walthourville

Here are the items we recycle at the fairs:

•        Electronics and electronic accessories

•        Cell phones and accessories

•        Household paint (the cans must be sealed well and clean--- not rusted--- and, at least, half full).  This paint is donated for reuse purposes and so it must be viable. If you have old paint is inadequate containers, please open the cans, add either sand or cat litter and let the paint dry up completely so that you can then toss the cans in the regular garbage.

•        LED, CFL’s and fluorescent light bulbs

•        Used motor oil and antifreeze

•        Car batteries.

•        Household batteries

•        Printer ink and toner cartridges

•        Telephone books, large sale catalogs and books

•        Household goods and clothes and shoes (gently used, please)

•        Old prescription medications and over the counter medications (no needles or syringes)

We will also host a Shred It! Day as well at the Liberty County Health Department site only on Sept.14.  You definitely want to start now sorting any legal, medical or financial files that you would like to safely recycle by shredding the documents. The Shred event will be available from 9 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on the 14.

The next event is our annual beach sweep on St Catherine’s Island on Saturday, Sept, 28.  A beach sweep means that we will be ‘sweeping’ any trash and debris left on the beaches by beach visitors. This is one of the most popular cleanups we do.  We are currently soliciting boaters to volunteer to provide transportation for our cleanup volunteers that day. If you have a boat and would like to participate, we would certainly welcome your involvement! We usually need about ten boats to adequately provide seating for our volunteers. Since seating is limited by our transportation availability, we encourage interested volunteers to register as soon as possible.  So, the time to register is NOW! Our registration list fills up quickly. We book volunteers in the order we receive their requests.
