Sunbury 5K

Lace up your running shoes, stretch your legs and run —or walk —the 10th annual Sunbury 5K scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

This year’s race benefits Carpathia Paws Animal Rescue, Hinesville Vietnam Veterans, and the Liberty Regional Coalition for the Homeless.

This will be the first year the race will take place without founder Patrick Boyle who started the annual fun run and walk back in 2010. Boyle moved from the area recently but is still involved with facilitating the event.

Filling in as the new race coordinator is Jim Collins, who has always been involved with the event from the beginning. Boyle’s wife Mia, has created all of the artwork for their annual posters and shirts.

Boyle said many people make the race possible.

“Sunbury residents and race supporters Lu Smith and Janet Lyle assist with onsite registration,” Boyle said. “Danny Goodman makes sure our parking area is ready to go. Jim Collins has been organizing sponsors and getting the posters up, and of course Barney Maley makes sure we have everything we need race morning at the Crab Company.  These people, our sponsors, and the runners and walkers who register every year are why the race has been such a labor of love for everyone involved.”

The event is being presented by long-time supporter Darsey, Black & Associates. Gold sponsors include the Sunbury Crab Company, Adam Herndon State Farm, Merritt & Grinstead Attorneys at Law, and Ankle & Foot Associates. Event Sponsors are:  Hill on Wheels Bicycle Shop, Fleet Feet Savannah, VIP Promotional Products, Reaching Milestones, Hupman Real Estate Group / Keller Williams, Midway Climate Controlled Storage, Rountree & Brady Insurance, Coastal EMC and the Coastal Courier as our Media Sponsor.

Since its inception the Sunbury 5K has drawn in hundreds of participants who either race or take their leisure stroll through the picturesque coastal town.

The route winds through the Villages of Sunbury, Fort Morris State Park and ends back at the Sunbury Crab Company.

The Sunbury 5K has been a locally supported and organized race since our first year in 2010.  Mia Boyle The local eatery opens post-race for hungry runners.
