The fifth annual Henry "Hank" White Memorial Golf Tournament, which raises scholarship money for local high school students and others in the community, is set for Aug. 15 at the Cherokee Rose Country Club in Hinesville.

According to committee member Derrick Taylor, registration is open until Aug. 8.

White was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the U.S. Army until 1976. He earned a Bronze Star and went on to work for the Army Corps of Engineers. He served as the state chaplain for the Georgia Veterans of Foreign Wars, a deacon at First Calvary Baptist Church and president of the First District Laymen of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia.

Taylor, along with White’s sons, Hank Jr. and Derek White, and Hank White Sr.’s widow, Jo, created the tournament in 2005 as a way to pay homage to his love of golf and his community.

Jo White said the tournament is a mix of two of her husband’s favorite hobbies: golf and working with young people.

The tournament offers scholarships based on its proceeds. Taylor said it’s up to students and community members to apply for the scholarships, which have eligibility guidelines.

To date, roughly 25 scholarships of $1,000 each have been awarded.
