When the Blazers’ basketball team was first formed about a year ago, it started as the Walthourville Blazers. But as the AAU squad grew and attained success, founder and coach Cedric Robertson re-named it the Liberty Blazers.
The coach said the first season was a success. Robertson said he has 50 players currently enrolled.
"Our first year has been more of a training session and learning experience," he said. "Our goal this past summer was to keep our students safe and in a positive atmosphere. We have done numerous community service projects and played in many tournaments such as South Carolina, Macon, Brunswick, as well as many other tournaments locally."
The coach said the Blazers are a year round organization that provides tutoring and mentoring services so players can enhance their academic as well as athletic abilities.
The coach said many projects are in the works.
"We have great plans for the future, such as opening a youth center as well as accumulating a cheerleading/step team," he said. "Our focus at this time is pointed toward our student’s education and scholastic achievements, as the children of tomorrow are now in our hands."
Robertson said his sponsors are The Liberty County Board of Education, Lewis Frazier Middle School, Dennis Waters, Chemtall, United Way, Atlantic Tire, Professional Eye Care, city of Walthourville, Osteen & Osteen, St. James Sports Center, Palm Coast Utilities and Liberty Recycling.
