The Long County boys basketball team continued to struggle this past Tuesday by losing to the Brantley County Herons, 56-65 in their final home game of the season.
The Herons jumped out to a 7-0 run against the Tide and had a 15-8 lead at the end of the first period.  The second period, was very even with Long County putting in 15 to their opponent’s 16, and at the half Brantley was on top 31-23.
In the third period the Long County boys started hitting from inside, and out rebounded the Heron’s and scored 14 to 7, and going into the final period, the Blue Tide was only down by one, 37-38.
The Brantley boys stepped it up early in the fourth and had a 12 point lead with 2:11 left in the game, but the Blue Tide went on a 8-0 run and narrowed the lead to 52-58, with just over a minute left in the game.
However, with under a minute left to play, the score was Herons 62, and Blue Tide 54. With the Tide forced to foul their opponents, the final score ended up being Long County 56 and Brantley County 65.
With the loss the Blue Tide finished their regular season with a 12-9 overall record, and a 9-5 2-AA record.  They also are the number two seed going into next week’s Region Tournament, and will have a first round bye.
When asked how he planned to go into the tournament, Blue Tide Coach Deshon Brock said, “We have to start running more and pick up the tempo.  Earlier in the season we were doing this and we were finishing the games; we haven’t been, and we have to get back to it.”
The tournament is scheduled for Feb. 15, 16 and 17 in Baxley, and the Blue Tide boys will play their first game next Friday at 5:30.
