No. 23 Eli Guest goes up for a rebound against the Savannah Christian Raiders. The Blue Tide won the game 61-52 to advance to the 2-AA Region Tournament Championship Game against the McIntosh County Buccaneers.
The Long County boy’s basketball team advanced to the Region 2-AA Tournament finals this past Friday in Baxley with a sound win over the Savannah Christian Raiders, 61-52.
The Blue Tide jumped out to a 16-5 lead, but a late surge in the first period by the Raiders narrowed the score to 16-11 at the end of one.  In the second period, Savannah Christian nearly matched the Tide point for point and went in at the half down 23-29.  But even though the Raiders were only down by six, it was obvious that the Long County team was the more physical team, and was being more aggressive under the boards.
In the third period the Red Raider boys jumped out to an 8-2 run on the Tide to even the score at 31-31 with less than three minutes in the period.  But by the end of the third the Blue Tide had a five-point lead, 39-34.
The fourth quarter was a fairly even period with Long County putting in 22 compared to the Savannah Christian’s 18, giving the Blue Tide a victory, and a trip into the finals.
Long County head coach Deshon Brock said he was pleased with the effort of the entire team.  He also said Nate Gooding played a good game coming off the bench, as well as Ricky Rivera, who replaced Prince Moody when he got into foul trouble.
“I was pleased with Brandon Simmons and Randy Boyd with their defensive play, as well as Justin Boyd playing unselfish and finding the open man,” Brock said.
In the game Nate Gooding had 10 points, Randy Boyd had 12 points, and the leading shooter for the night was Justin Boyd with 22 points.
