Bradwell Institute and Liberty County School System officials cut the ribbon on the improvements to its softball field and its new tennis courts Tuesday afternoon.
“What you see in front of you is just outstanding,” Bradwell Principal Roland Van Horn said from the softball diamond’s circle.
Van Horn recalled the old field, which needed a special clay from a special pit and had to be hauled in by a special truck.
Van Horn also cited the education special purpose local option sales tax, which provided the financing for the work.
“This field looks amazing,” school board chair Verdel Jones said. “We’re so glad the citizens of Liberty County are able to provide this for our students.”
Bradwell student-athletes also expressed their gratitude for the new facilities.
“I would like to thank the board of education for putting money into the tennis courts,” tennis player Lea Martinez said. “We are very thankful for all the money and I am very excited for the upcoming season.”
“We would like to thank our board of education for investing in our softball programs and providing us with all the new facilities,” said softball player Heather Garrett.
The work on the softball field and the tennis court topped $1.5 million. The softball complex also got new dugouts and storage rooms, interior renovations of the locker rooms, new concession stand, press box, restroom, an extended field house and a covered batting cage structure.
“We want our students to have the best,” Superintendent Dr. Franklin Perry said.
