The Hinesville Hurricanes semi-professional football team is headed to the Southeastern American Football League Championship game after shutting out the Tri-County Panthers 60-0 Saturday night at Long Bell Stadium.

The championship game, scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday Sept. 25, pits the ’Canes against the Anderson Red Dawgs of South Carolina.

The game was supposed to take place in Hinesville, but Hurricanes head coach James Sharp said league officials decided it would be better to have the game in a neutral territory to accommodate both teams. The game is at Metter Middle School’s football field in Metter.

"We made it to the conference semi-finals last year but we lost," the coach said. "We have a chance to take the championship trophy for the first time. We got the division title and the conference title and now we are chasing the ring."

The ’Canes players hope the community will come out to support their championship run. Additionally, a few athletes will work with children during the annual Fort Stewart/NFL Youth Punt, Kick and Pass event Friday evening.
