A meeting to discuss the tryout schedules and preparation for the upcoming AAU season of the Coastal Crew Rebels will be this week.
Ernie Walthour, chairman, will meet with the coordinators, coaches and staff to set schedules. Boys tryouts are anticipated to be around Feb. 28. The Rebels have five teams, broken down by ages.
“We are a traveling basketball program and, last year, we went on 21 major trips to play,” Walthour said. “It gives the college scouts an opportunity to see a lot of the junior and senior players, this is our third year with this Rebel program, but we’ve had the Coastal Crew Rebel team since 1992.”
Walthour is going to try and host another Southeast Hoop It Up, like the one they did last year at St. James which would be scheduled sometime in April. This tournament gives an opportunity for the public to come out and cheer their local team and meet and greet the players.
“As high school basket ball winds down, AAU basketball gets started and we are excited about the old kids coming back and the new kids trying out,” he said.
The tryouts for the Lady Mavericks AAU team begin on Feb. 17 and registration fees are $25.
