The Falcons take their first step into the 2007 season when the team travels to New York to battle the Jets in a preseason match-up tonight at 7.
Bobby Petrino will make his head coaching debut on the sideline along with a staff of 12 new coaches. For Petrino, it’s his first NFL game since 2001 when he served as the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Petrino spent the last four years as the Head Coach of the Louisville Cardinals where he compiled a 41-9 overall record and a 22-1 mark at home.
This season, the Falcons welcome new additions in QB Joey Harrington, WR Joe Horn, FB Ovie Mughelli and DB Lewis Sanders. Harrington has posted seven-career fourth quarter comebacks while Horn, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, has totaled 8,501 career receiving yards.
Ovie Mughelli was named to USA Today’s All-Joe Team last season and Lewis Sanders has logged 29 career passes defensed in the secondary. First-round draft pick, DE Jamaal Anderson (8th overall) looks to make an immediate impact after ranking sixth on the Arkansas career record list with 17.5 quarterback sacks.
The Falcons and Jets have met eight times in the preseason with the series tied at four games apiece. Atlanta is riding a three-game preseason winning streak versus New York, which includes at 20-10 win in the last preseason meeting in 2001 at the Meadowlands. Both teams finished the preseason with a 2-2 record last year.
