The sixth annual Joe Watkins Memorial Scholarship Flag Football Tournament has been set for Dec. 17.

The tournament raises money for scholarships to graduates of high schools in Liberty County, who played baseball or softball during their high school careers. This year’s winners were Jeremy Scott and Meagan Folker, who graduated from LCHS.

The tournament is named for Watkins, an LCHS graduate who was attending Georgia Southern University on a baseball scholarship in 2011 when he died in a car wreck.

His friends, Mystery Ellert and Levi Deese, thought up the tournament as a tribute to Watkins and they, along with friends Brandon Whitmore, Trey Sikes, Cameron Harris, Javaughn Shuman and Austin Schultz, have kept it going. Kathy Sikes heads up adult volunteers and tracks concessions and the money.

Over the years six $1,000 scholarships have been granted.

The tournament is scheduled for when college students are home for the holidays.

Games will be played on the soccer fields at James Brown Park.

If you’d like to get a team up to play, call Whitmore at (912) 480-7528 or find him on Facebook. Adults can volunteer can call Sikes at 977-2999.
