The Long County, Liberty County, and Bradwell Institute football teams all recently had players honored at their annual region meetings. The Blue Tide and Panthers both placed several athletes on the All-Region teams for Region 2-AAA while the Tigers placed players on the team for Region 2-AAAAAA.
The Blue Tide were headed by senior defensive back Treyon Davis, who was named the 2019 Comeback Player of the Year. Davis missed most of the 2019 season after injuring his knee in the team’s scrimmage game in August. He played in the team’s overtime loss to Tattnall County and in the season finale against Brantley County and recorded eight tackles and three pass breakups.
The Tide also placed two players on the first team All-Region teams. Senior Trajan Weatherspoon was named an All-Region wide receiver after he recorded over 300 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore Dwayne Rowe was named an All-Region defensive back, recording 65 tackles and six pass breakups throughout the year.
Junior offensive lineman Jakobe Roberts and sophomore kicker Chris Garcia was named to the All-Region 2nd Team Offense while junior linebacker E’ben Thomas made the All-Region 2nd Team defense. Honorable mention for offense went to sophomore running back Tony Phillips, who rushed for over 700 yards and six touchdowns and sophomore offensive lineman Kyle Young. Honorable mention for defense went to senior defensive linemen Chris Robinette and Malik Berry, senior defensive back Maurice Carter, and sophomore defensive back Cameryn Johnson.
The Panthers were honored with senior quarterback Dionte Bowens being named Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for 1,146 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for 364 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Markel Johson was named Athlete of the Year. He rushed for 739 yards and 10 touchdowns while catching 10 passes for 256 yards and one score.
Senior Ladarius Mack was named to the Region 2-AAA First Team as a wide receiver as he caught 15 passes for 342 yards and six touchdowns. Senior Brock Pavo also made the First Team as an offensive lineman. Senior Nicholas Bennett was named to the First Team as a defensive back after he recorded 34 tackles and two interceptions.
Senior Anthony Parker made the second team as a receiver while senior Andru Richards, senior Nolan Dickens, and sophomore Marquese Johnson made the second team on defense as a defensive lineman, linebacker, and defensive back. Honorable mention went to offensive lineman William Jenkins, defensive lineman Demaurai Booker, and defensive back Daniel Robinson.
For Bradwell, they had a total of 11 players receive honors for Region 2-AAAAAA. They were headlined by seniors quarterback Dariuse Cooper, running back Corrie Walker, wide receiver Quin Chapman, and offensive lineman De’Leon Madria all making the First Team offense.
Cooper threw for 1,257 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 588 yards and seven touchdowns. Walker rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns while catching 21 passes for 391 yards and three scores. Chapman caught 25 passes for 355 yards and four touchdowns.
The Tigers placed junior defensive lineman Kairen Cheneau, sophomore linebacker Eli Leiataua, and senior punter Kenneth Lockhart on the All-Region First Team defense.
Cheneau recorded 28 tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Leiataua recorded 46 tackles and six sacks while recovering one fumble and forcing two. Lockhart averaged 40.5 yards per punt and dropped nine inside the 20. He also had over 1,000 yards on kickoffs and seven touchbacks while going 20-22 on PATs and 10-11 on field goals with a long of 43 yards.
Honorable mention for the Tigers included receiver Tristian Pullins, offensive lineman DeVonte Walton, junior linebacker Tyrone Bush, and sophomore defensive end Mikah Perry.
