While Monday’s game against Frederica Academy was called for weather, the First Presbyterian Highlanders were still basking in a one-point win over Georgia Christian on Saturday.

The 9-8 victory came in the bottom of the 7th inning from Highlander Tim Ashman off a bunt from Ryan Smiley.

The victory gives the Highlanders a 2-0 region record. They are 2-3 overall.

Head coach Joey Brown said the Highlanders had an 8-4 lead in the top of the 7th but Georgia Christian loaded the bases and got a hit out to centerfield, bringing in three runs. That batter later came home to tie the game at 8.

In the bottom half, the Highlanders’ lead-off, Ashman, was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd and 3rd and then saw the bunt.

The coach said the Highlanders had several bright spots at the plate.

"Leadoff batter Tyler Hensley went 2-3," Brown said. "We also played power ball, including a double and home run by Nathan Ward, a triple by Josh Rogers and a double by Ryan Smiley."

Ward pitched for 5 innings and the win.

"I think we are where we need to be right now as far as games that count in the region," Brown said. "I’m very proud of the hustle and dedication from the guys."

The Highlanders were scheduled to host a strong, undefeated Citizen’s Christian yesterday at 4 p.m. The Courier will bring you the results as they become available.
