The Hinesville Gators U16 soccer team finished second at the State Rec Cup Championship in Columbus.
Sunday, the Gators lost 1-0 in the championship game to AFUSA Attack.
Ironically, the Gators defeated the Attack 1-0 earlier in the day.
“To lose by one point, it’s a heartbreaker,” Hinesville coach Arthur Edgar said. “But, second place is good. I don’t feel bad. We beat them in the morning game.”
The tournament featured four teams and was played under a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the finals.
The Gators started the tournament with a 3-1 win over NSA Mutiny (Norcross) Saturday monring. Josh Rogers, Cody Folker and Chris Schuster each scored a goal for Hinesville.
Later in the evening, the Gators routed Henry County 5-0.
In the win against AFUSA, Joey Bell scored the game’s lone goal in the waning minutes of the second half.
Edgar said he is proud of his players for their accomplishments.
The Gators U12 Green also competed in the state finals.
The Green finished 2-1 and third in their pool, narrowly missing out on the championship because of the goal differential tie-breaker.
The Green started the tournament, defeating eventual champion Dacula 3-2. They followed the win, by defeating the CFC Stingrays, but lost a controlversial game to the NASA Cyclones 4-2.
Gator coach Tom Sukuratana said the Cylcones did not follow the substitituion rule and should have been disqualified. He has filed an official protest with the tournament’s board and is awaiting a reply.
