The Glynn Academy Red Terrors erupted for 37 second-half points, and posted a 57-12 rout of Bradwell Institute at Glynn County Stadium on September 6.
The loss, in the region opener for both teams, dropped the Tigers to 1-2 on the season. The Terrors improved to 2-1.
The 57 points allowed was the most the Tigers have given up since surrendering 64 to Brunswick in 2017, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association.
The Tigers will host Effingham County (0-3, 0-1) on Friday in another Region 1-AAAAA matchup. The Rebels fell 42-20 to Brunswick in their region opener. While they have scored 35 points per game, they have given up 43 per game.
Bradwell trailed 8-6 on Carlito Savea’s 1-yard sneak with 2:49 left in the first quarter. His scramble and completion to Jonathan Holloway for 64 yards set up the score.
Glynn embarked on a 15-play 66-yard drive, converting a fourth down and another third down along the way, to go up 16-6 on Greg Peacock’s 8-yard run. The Terrors, who successfully employed the swinging gate formation on each of their first three point-after attempts, took a 16-6 lead.
Then Glynn took advantage of Bradwell’s miscues in the final six minutes to blow the game open.
Zion Gervais ran a fumble back 60 yards for a score, and the Tigers fumbled on their next play of scrimmage, setting up Da’sean Howard’s 2-yard TD run.
Glynn’s special teams units led to the next two scores and nearly delivered a third in the waning moments of the half. Ivan Tovar Torres’ punt was partially blocked, and the ball landed and spun back toward the line of scrimmage. As no Tiger player touched it to down the punt, Quantavious Green picked it up at the 15-yard line and strolled in for another touchdown.
The Red Terrors recovered a bad snap on the next punt attempt, and turned that into Jayden Ellis’ 8-yard touchdown toss to Peacock and a 45-6 lead with 1:41 left in the first half.
With less than a minute left in the second quarter, Torres evaded a punt rush and got off a kick the Terrors returned to Bradwell’s 24-yard line with 30 seconds left. Glynn got to the 6 before ending the half on an incomplete pass.
Wade Cobb got the Tigers’ second TD of the night on the third play of the third quarter, taking Savea’s quick toss and racing 65 yards to the end zone.
Howard added a 1-yard run and backup quarterback Nick Munoz threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to round out Glynn’s scoring. The Terrors also got to the Tigers 6 late in the fourth quarter before fumbling.
Cobb ran for 101 yards, and Savea was 11 of 18 for 142 yards passing. The Tigers also lost 80 yards on bad snaps.
The Red Terrors amassed only 266 yards in posting 57 points, rushing for 133 and passing for 133. Their worst starting field position of the night was their own 34-yard line, and seven drives started at no worse than their own 48.
