Hammerheads open swim season

On June 8, the Liberty County Recreation Department swim team, the Hammerheads, hosted its first swim meet for the season at Stafford pool, pitting first-timers and veterans against swimmers from five other counties.

The first heat consisted of the distance events. Hammerhead Sandra Scott placed first, dominating the 50-yard freestyle for the 9-10 age division while Harlee Stanford and MaKenna Rhea placed third and fifth respectively. In the boys 9-10 class, Patrick Baker finished in first place.

In the 100-yard freestyle, McKaylin Darsey placed first in the 11-12 age class for the girls with Rebecca Stock’s fourth-place finish rounding out the Hammerheads’ group. For the boys, Robert Hooe placed fifth for the same age division.

In the 13-14 age group, Elle Metivier finished third in the girl’s 100-yard freestyle while Jimmy Arnold finished first for the boys’ class. Jennifer Gaughran, from the 15-18 age group, finished third in the girls’ event and Taylor Baker finishing seventh in the boy’s field.

The second heat was the short distance events and Gabbie Somerset placed 12th in the 25-yard freestyle and eighth in the 25-yard backstroke for the 7-8 girls age group.

In the 9-10 age class, Rhea placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke and 15th in the 25-yard freestyle. Stanford placed 11th in the 25-yard freestyle and eighth in the 25-yard butterfly and Scott added more first place finishes in the 100-yard IM and the 25-yard butterfly with a near state record time of 14.62.

Samuel Baker placed third in the 25-yard butterfly, first in the 100-yard IM and second in the 25-yard freestyle. Patrick Baker placed third in the 25-yard backstroke and fifth in the 25-yard backstroke.

In the 11-12 age class, Amanda McGrath finished fourth in the 50-yard brest stroke and fifth in the 50-yard backstroke. Darsey finished first in the 50-yard backstroke and second in the 50-yard breast stroke. Rebecca Stock finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and seventh in the 50-yard backstroke. Hooe finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and ninth in the 50-yard butterfly.

In the 13-14 age class, Margaret Turner finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, second in the 50-yard breast stroke and second in the 50-yard backstroke. Elle Metivier finished first in the 50-yard butterfly and seventh in the 50-yard butterfly. Jimmy Arnold placed second in the 50-yard breast stroke and second 100-yard IM.

In the 15-18 age class, Jennifer Gaughran finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 50-yard breast stroke. Taylor Baker for the boys finished sixth in the 100-yard IM and fifth in the 50-yard backstroke.

The Hammerheads are in Douglas for their second swim meet this weekend.
