The Liberty County Panthers gave up a 5-4 lead in the 7th inning Saturday against the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, letting the Jackets come ahead by one and take the game 5-6, even with the Jackets facing 2 outs.
Panther coach Steve Cotrell said his pitcher suddenly lost the strike zone. Skyler Hoffer gets the loss and the coach said Chris Arnold deserved the win after going 6-2/3 innings.
Cotrell said his team has been playing anticipating a disaster, instead of finishing the game. He said they have not found a way to close tight games and are currently searching for the right toughness and attitude to get them through.
Ethan Pringle went 2 for 4, Aaron Hoffer went 2 for 3, Skyler Hoffer went 2 for 4 and Aaron Pringle went 1 for 3 with a 2B and 3 RBIs.
Although its all business, Cotrell still encourages his players to have some fun as they begin the post-season. They were scheduled to play Thomson at home Tuesday in a match pitting the sub-region north team against the Panther squad.
“We will find out on Tuesday if we are ready to move on,” Cotrell said.
The winner automatically gets a bid to play at state. South Effingham has an automatic bid to state as the undefeated team in the 3S-AAA region. Only the top four teams get a chance for the title.
Regardless of Tuesday’s outcome the Panthers have scheduled a doubleheader for Saturday against Savannah Christian, starting at noon.
