Fort Stewart Youth Sports 12U girls basketball team brought home second place from the USBA Ball N at the Beach Tournmanet in North Myrtle Beach last weekend.
The local girls hit the road on Friday for the chance to play teams from North Carolina and South Carolina.
“These young ladies play ball year round in Carolina,” coordinator Evelyn Alston said. “Our girls looked good playing against them and we came mighty close to bringing home the championship trophy. We are proud of them.”
She said the local team is comprised of some of the best players in the Fort Stewart/Hinesville area.
“They have been playing recreational ball for a number of years now with Fort Stewart’s Youth Sports and Liberty County Recreation Department,” Alston said. “In the spring of the year, after their regular basketball season is completed, we unite the young ladies from the community to play on our traveling basketball team.”
Besides sports, goals focus on character, academics and respect.
“When these young ladies hit the court, they must work hard,” coach Laquenten Jones said. “We are teaching them skills that will last a lifetime.”
Coach Terrence Alston said, “We have a great group of young ladies that we are truly proud of and excited about working with this year. With a little more time in the gym there is no doubt that these girls can go and compete with the best teams in the Southeast.
The next trip is May 16-18 to Charleston, S.C., for the “The Lowcountry Classic.”
