The Liberty Lady Mavericks are hitting the road again, this time they travel to Fitzgerald. Saturday, the 14-under AAU team competes in the Summer Fest Shoot Out. The Lady Mavs’ first game is at 10 a.m. Eleven other teams also will attend.
Recently, the Lady Mavericks won two of three games in the Capital City Tournament in Columbia, S.C.
They beat Carolina Elite 45-34 to start the tournament, then lost 46-34 to the Rough Riders Hoop Stars. The Lady Mavs ended the tournament with a 37-34 win over the South Carolina Stars Red.
Though the Mavs missed out on a national bid, coach Aaron White is proud of his team.
“It was a really good turning point for the team,” he said. “Even though we did not get the outcome we were looking for, we really came together and did some amazing things up there. They showed a lot of unity, heart and character.”
The big test for the Lady Mavericks is June 15-17 at the River Street Classic in Savannah, where elite teams from all over the Southeast will play.
White said for his players to be successful, they must play consistently all game and play as a team.
“We have to force opponents to play our game,” he said. “If not, then we play their game.”
