Five Liberty County softball players recently were named to the 2014 All-Region 3-AAAA team.
According to Lady Panther coach Jerome Standard, the highest honor went to junior Lady Panther Kathryn Carter, who was named pitcher of the year. Carter notched 12 wins, pitched 111 2/3 innings and recorded 115 strikeouts this season while walking only 20 batters with a 1.69 earned-run average. Carter helped the offense as well, batting 34 of 81 with 21 RBIs, three doubles, 21 runs scored and a team-high five home runs.
Kaleigh Fisher, Rachael Smith and Taylor Rine made the All-Region first team.
Fisher, a sophomore, was the Lady Panthers’ other pitching threat but was sidelined near the end of the season with an ankle injury. She had four wins, a 2.43 ERA, pitched 63.1 innings and notched 59 strikeouts and 20 walks. Fisher batted 21 of 66 with 21 runs scored, 10 RBIs, five doubles and a triple.
Smith batted 34 of 89 with 35 runs scored, 19 RBIs, seven doubles and a triple this season. Rine was second on the team with home runs with three. She finished the year 31-of-95 batting with 16 runs scored, 23 RBIs, four doubles and a triple.
Senior Serina Davenport made the All-Region honorable-mention list. She hit 21 of 59 with 25 runs scored, 11 RBIs, six doubles, two triples and one home run.
Liberty County finished the season 16-16 overall and 5-5 in the region. The Lady Panthers made it to the first round of the state playoffs, where they were eliminated by Pike County.
The Lady Panthers will be honored at their annual banquet at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Liberty County Performing Arts Center.
