GUYTON — One Division I prospect was enough to handle. Two turned out to be a little too much.
The Liberty County Lady Panthers, behind their two Division I-bound stars, beat the South Effingham Lady Mustangs 53-17 Tuesday night in a Region 3-AAA girls basketball game.
With the win, the Lady Panthers improved to 14-4 and 3-1 in the region. Center Nisha Adams, a 6-foot-2 junior, had a game-high 18 points while junior point guard Metra Walthour finished with 13. Both have committed to play for Georgia Tech.
“It’s fun to watch them play,” Lady Mustangs coach Stacy Couey said. “Just not against us.”
Adams had 15 points in the first half, nine coming in the first quarter. Walthour got off to a slower start, scoring five points in the first half, but finished with three 3-pointers.
“Nisha’s just a phenomenal player,” Liberty coach Carolyn Kelly said. “She can run the court well. She can run the court better than any big girl. The biggest part of her game is being able to rebound and get downcourt so fast.”
Walthour, a starter since she was a freshman, had a stretch where she blocked Missy Ray’s shot, drove down for a baseline jumper and drilled a 3 on the next possession.
“Metra is the kind of player who’s like a gift,” Kelly said. “She sees the court better than anybody. She can do so many things.”
Liberty’s defense held South Effingham to three second-half field goals. Candice Kennedy and Monasha Sams led the Lady Mustangs with five points each. Megan Cox had three points, on a third-quarter 3-pointer, and Ray and Whitney Jones had two points apiece.
Six other Lady Panthers scored, showing the balance beyond the two stars they have.
“That’s the good part of having players like Metra and Nesha,” Kelly said. “They make other players better. Metra and Nisha make them play up to their level.”
