Lady Panther Taylor Rine was a perfect 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs including a home run to propel the Liberty County High School softball team to a 9-0 win over Portal High at home Thursday.
The non-region game was finished in four and a half innings.
The Lady Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and Rine nailed a grand slam.
“As soon as she hit it I knew it was gone,” Lady Panther coach Jerome Standard said.
Also slamming one over the fence was Lady Panther pitcher Kathryn Carter. Her solo homer in the second inning gave the Liberty girls a 5-0 lead.
More importantly, Carter tossed nine strike outs, keeping the Portal from scoring. Carter pitched four innings. Kaleigh Fisher came in at the top of the fifth and struck out three to end the game.
Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers had added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth from Rine, a single 2 RBI shot from Serena Davenport and Carter.
Carter finished 3-for-3 with 1 RBI and three runs scored. Davenport was 1-of-3 with 1 RBI, Cassidy Collum and Tia Anderson were both 1-of-3. Fisher was 1-of-3 with two runs scored.
Standard said the girls hit the ball well, but as always there is room for improvement.
“We still left runners on base two times,” he said. “And some of those were in scoring position… You can’t do that against quality teams. Obviously the hitting was good today but both pitchers were just fantastic as well.”
Standard thinks they will finish in the top four and make the playoffs.
“But we can’t take anyone for granted,” he said.
